On stage 1 in Circuit de la Sarthe - 4 April - he crashed with 2 km to the finish line. He was taken to the hospital with a cerebral edema. 30 hours after the crash he went into coma and his condition was very serious. He had two operations that were succesful. After the operations he was kept in a coma to let the brain heal. (source: cyclingnews.com)
After six days he came out of the coma. And the day after, the doctors took him off the ventilator he had been on since his condition worsened last week. (source: cyclingnews.com)
