In the beginning of April, he was fired from the US Postal team because the Italian Olympic Committee recommended to suspend him for four and a half years. The reason being that the Italian police found EPO and growth hormones in his hotel room during the Giro last year.
In the beginning of May, he was suspended for six months by the Italian Cycling Federation. He had served two months and will be able to return in September.
In the middle of July the Court of Arbitration for Sport confirmed that he will get a nine month suspension. Thereby, he will be suspended until the beginning of May 2003.
