During a raid at the rider's hotel rooms, during Giro d'Italia, the police found doping drugs in Frigo's room. He confessed that the drugs belonged to him. He was immediately fired from Fassa Bortolo. On the following press conference he told that he hadn't used any of the drugs but he had brought them "just in case" he should get "heavy legs".
In the end of June he was questioned by the public prosecutor in Florence. He confessed that he had used some of the doping drugs and he added that he had been using doping in his entire professional career.
In the middle of September he was given a 6 months ban by the Italian cycling federation due to possession of doping drugs.
In the middle of September he signed a contract with Tacconi Sport-Vini Caldirola for 2002.
