He suffered a heart attack June 13 while he was out training. He was kept in an artificial coma for more than two weeks. However, the doctors were unable to save his life. He passed away June 30, 28 years old. (source: cyclingnews.com)

In the beginning of April, it was reported that he had to stop riding temporarily due to heart problems. He now has to undergo some examinations.
In the beginning of June, the Lotto team's doctor announced that Vermaut will never ride for the team again.
After having visited several doctors who have had different opinions about his heart problem, a professor in Saarbrüken told him that he could continue to ride as professional cyclist. He will now continue his career at the Palmans-Collstrop team.
After riding a couple of races for Palmans-Collstrop he decided to end his career since he still felt some problems. Further examinations have shown that there is something wrong with the adrenaline function in the right heart chamber.
